Gin swilling, cigar chomping, overbearing June Buckridge has played the beloved character ‘Sister George’ in the popular BBC Radio Drama, Applehurst, for six years. But being the star doesn’t stop BBC executives deciding to kill her off in an attempt to halt the show’s falling ratings. Furious at the lack of loyalty, June’s precarious personal world heads into a tailspin.

First produced on stage 50 years ago, with the great Beryl Reid as June and giving Eileen Atkins’ her theatre debut as ‘Childie’, this ground breaking dark comedy takes us to the world of BBC television and radio in the1960s where perception is everything and no one is who they say they are.

With the recent revelations surrounding Jimmy Saville, was this iconic play an unwitting glimpse into the tawdy, sordid media world of the 1960s as it really was?

ACT I

SCENE I. On a ship at sea: a tempestuous noise of thunder and lightning heard.

Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest, was the culmination of his life’s work and his final act in the theatre. As Prospero hangs up his enchanted cloak, Shakespeare sets down his quill for the last time: “Now my charms are all o’erthrown.” As the horizons of the known world grow larger, through discovery and colonisation of brave new worlds, Shakespeare magics up a prescient and timely tale of power, servitude, and enslavement. Teeming with characters who burst at the seams with vitality and vigour, the Bard creates a play unlike any of his others. An uncharted island, a banished duke turned sorcerer, his “uncivilised” daughter, a begrudging sprite indentured into servitude, and an enraged, enslaved Island native, all are brought to life on the stage.

The ensemble of the London Theatre Workshop have travelled back in time, and distilled that sense of new-found wonder and terror that Shakespeare felt when he set quill to scroll. Every moment of The Tempest bursts to life in surprising, shocking, new and terrifying ways. What results is a visual and aural kaleidoscope of senses, impressions and experiences. Join us as we use music, movement, and the stuff that dreams are made on to breathe new life into this classic play!

Directed by Associate Producer of London Theatre Workshop, Brandon Force, director of 2014’s critically acclaimed Romeo & Juliet.

EDGES is a work of musical theatre by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
It is a song cycle about coming of age, growth and self-discovery of people mostly in their 20s.
The songs really give you an insight into each personality and those watching can enjoy the show whilst also relating to the characters in some way. Its most famous song, “Be My Friend”, has come to be commonly known as the “Facebook song!
With an uptempo, feel-good theme throughout, EDGES won’t disappoint.

London Theatre Workshop Relocates To Central London’s Leadenhall Market

 

London Theatre Workshop is delighted to announce that after two successful years located above the Eel Brook Pub in Fulham, the company is relocating to an exciting new venue in Central London.

The company’s new home is nestled right in the heart of the City of London’s financial district, within the beautiful and historic Leadenhall Market. A short walk from Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Bank and Monument stations, the new space is being re-developed to house a 60-seat theatre, much-needed rehearsal space, plus a creatives’ workshop and office.

London Theatre Workshop will officially re-open in March 2016 as a venue that can be hired for rehearsals, auditions, workshops and rehearsed readings. The company’s first season of in-house work will be announced in the coming months. A series of opening events, guided tours and performances is currently being scheduled.

It is confirmed that Ray Rackham will continue as Artistic Director for London Theatre Workshop. Under Rackham, the company’s mission as a hub for theatrical innovation will be further established in the new space; dedicated to finding, developing and producing theatre of the highest quality, celebrating the fusion between music and drama.

London Theatre Workshop was founded in 2013, and officially opened at the Eel Brook location in March 2014. Under the Artistic Directorship of Ray Rackham, LTW has produced critically-acclaimed musicals and plays, including ORDINARY DAYS (Best Musical nominee at the 2014 Broadway World and Off-West-End Awards), JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY (recipient of the Artistic Excellence Angel Award at the Brighton Fringe Festival), the UK premiere of Harvey Fierstein and John Bucchino’s A CATERED AFFAIR, a revival of Eugene O’Neill’s AH WILDERNESS!, the European premiere of musical VOTE FOR ME, annual Shakespeare celebrations ROMEO AND JULIET and THE TEMPEST and Jason Robert Brown’s PARADE (Best Musical nominee 2015 Broadway World Award). APARTMENT 40C, written by Ray Rackham, with music by Tom Lees, enjoyed its world premiere in December 2014 and garnered London Theatre Workshop’s first transfer out of the workshop and into the St James Studio in April 2015.
In December 2015 Ray Rackham’s original musical play THROUGH THE MILL, charting the turbulent life of Judy Garland, had its world premiere and received significant critical acclaim as well as Off-West-End award nominations for Best New Play and Best Female for Lucy Penrose playing Young Judy.

London Theatre Workshop has re-located to Leadenhall Market in the heart of the City of London; the only theatre situated within the Square Mile.

Moving from our previous home in Fulham has meant the opportunity to re-launch and re-develop in a brand new bespoke space, which we have designed from the floorboards up! For the past few months we have been busy creating a brand new black box studio space from what was a series of interconnecting conference rooms. Our studio theatre will join bespoke workshop and office space, making London Theatre Workshop a unique destination venue for artists, theatre practitioners and audiences alike.

To celebrate our move to the City and to raise much-needed funds to improve and develop our infrastructure, we are delighted to launch our “Name a Seat” campaign.

Naming a seat is a very personal way for you or your company to contribute to and support London Theatre Workshop and the exciting theatrical hub we are building.

London Theatre Workshop is a not for profit organisation, which is only able to run thanks to the support and commitment of its volunteer team, known as the LTW Family.

Your generous financial donation will enable us to raise much needed core funds to develop the theatre and ancillary spaces, supporting London Theatre Workshop in our mission of finding, developing and producing work of the highest quality, celebrating the fusion between music and drama.
